10. The Traces of an Empire

A couple of years ago, on one summer morning in June, with Monsoon rains just about to arrive in force and before they could make it impossible for me to travel, I started from my home along with 3 friends to visit a relatively unknown mountain pass in the Sahyadri or Western Ghat Mountains of India. This pass, known as Naneghat or the Pass of Coins, has a documented history of more than 2000 years.Just near the narrow pass, in a huge cave, originally built as a resting place for the weary traveler, I found a set of rock inscriptions that described deeds of an ancient king of a dynasty that had ruled the Deccan plateau in India for about 400 years and whose empire was stretched over a vast area. I got deeply interested in this part of Indian history. Unfortunately, there is very little information that is available about this dynasty known as 'Satavahanas.' I then and there only, decided to travel to all the places, that still carry some evidence, either in form of rock inscriptions or carvings from the Satavahana period. This book describes my travels to these places.

9. एका साम्राज्याच्या शोधात

सातवाहन साम्राज्याच्या पाऊलखुणा शोधण्यासाठी केलेले प्रवास

दोन वर्षांपूर्वी, पावसाळ्यातील पहिला जोरदार पाऊस पडायला लागून घराबाहेर पडणे सुद्धा अशक्य होण्याआधी, जून महिन्यातल्या एका सकाळी, माझ्या 3 मित्रांबरोबर मी विशेष परिचित नसलेल्या अशा सह्याद्रीच्या घाटमाथ्यावरच्या एका घाटनाळीला भेट देण्यासाठी म्हणून बाहेर पडलो होतो. नाणेघाट म्हणून ओळखल्या जाणार्‍या या घाटनाळीला निदान 2000 वर्षांचा तरी लिखित इतिहास आहे.
थकल्या- भागल्या वाटसरूला दोन घटका विसावा घेता यावा, थंड पाणी पोटभर पिता यावे यासाठी या घाटनाळीच्या लगतच खोदलेल्या एका मोठ्या गुंफेत, मला अनेक शिलालेख त्या वेळेस दिसले होते. दख्खनच्या विस्तृत भागावर ज्या एका राजघराण्याचे राज्य 400 वर्षांहून अधिक काल टिकले होते त्याच राजघराण्यातील एका कर्तुत्ववान राजाच्या कारकिर्दीचा आणि कर्तुत्वाचा जणू आलेखच त्या शिलालेखात वर्णन केलेला होता.

नाणेघाट्च्या भेटीवरून परत आल्यावर दख्खनच्या इतिहासातल्या या कालखंडाबाबत मला बरीच रुची वाटू लागली. परंतु असे लक्षात येऊ लागले की 'सातवाहन' या नावाने परिचित असलेल्या या राजघराण्याची फारच अल्प माहिती उपलब्ध आहे. त्याच वेळी मी असा संकल्प सोडला की दख्खन मधील ज्या ज्या ठिकाणी सातवाहनांबद्दल, शिलालेख, शिल्पे, भित्तीचित्रे या स्वरूपातली काहीतरी माहिती उपलब्ध होऊ शकते अशा सर्व ठिकाणांना आपण भेट द्यायची. माझ्या या भेटींचे आणि तिथे बघितलेल्या सातवाहन साम्राज्याच्या पाऊलखुणांचे वर्णन या पुस्तकात मी वाचकांच्या समोर ठेवतो आहे. सातवाहनांच्या पाऊलखुणा शोधण्याच्या माझ्या या यत्नात माझ्या मनाला जे समाधान मिळाले आहे ते समाधान वाचकांना हे वर्णन वाचताना मिळेल अशी मला आशा आहे.

8. Making Sense of India

If trying to understand or describe India, with its myriad variety of landscapes, weathers and people,is an impossible task, anyone would ask, what a humble proletarian like me, is trying to do something here that is impossible? Only thing that I can submit in my defense, while writing this book is that I have no intention of discovering India here. I am trying to make sense of it in my own way with hope that readers will like it.

7. Looking Glass World

This book contains 30 short essays written by me and published in my blog Akshardhool.The writings included here, really speaking, are my views and observations, about happenings in other

countries as seen from India. Essentially, these are like mirror images, sometimes distorted by the deficiencies of the mirror. Hence the name; Looking Glass World.

The articles in this book are about many subjects, history, strategic relationships between countries, archaeological treasures and geography. It is a mixture without any common thread, still of great interest to me.

5. शंका- कुशंका

कां? व कसे? हे दोन प्रश्न आपल्याला रोजच्या जगात वावरताना, प्रवासात असताना किंवा नुसते बसून विचार करत असताना सुद्धा, ठायी ठायी जाणवत राहतात. यातल्या अनेक गोष्टींची उत्तरे भौतिकशास्त्र देऊ शकते. काहींची उत्तरे शोधण्यासाठी अज्ञात अंतराळाचा शोध घेणे भाग पडते. जीवशास्त्र किंवा रसायन यांच्यासारखी इतर शास्त्रे काही शंकांचा खुलासा करू शकतात तर काही वेळा वैद्यकीय किंवा समाज शास्त्रांचा सुद्धा आधार घेण्याची वेळ येते तर इतिहास- भूगोलात काही प्रश्नांची उत्तरे सापडतात.

माझ्या मनाला पडलेल्या अशा काही शंका किंवा कुशंका व त्यांचे माझ्या मनाने केलेले विश्लेषण, शब्दरूपाने माझ्या ‘अक्षरधूळ’ या ब्लॉगवर, मी अनेक वेळा वाचकांना सादर करत असतो. त्यातल्याच काही लेखांचे संकलन करून, हे पुस्तक वाचकांना सादर करताना मला आनंद होतो आहे.

भारतरत्न धोंडो केशव क़र्वे यांनी नारायण महादेव आठवले यांना पुण्याला आणले व शिक्षण दिले. हिंगण्याच्या संस्थेत व नंतर S.N.D.T.विद्यापीठात प्रिन्सिपॉल म्हणून काम केले. निवृत्त झाल्यावर स्वत;चा कारखाना सुरू केला. व यशस्वी झाले. यंत्रांचा ध्यास असलेल्या एका यंत्रवेड्याची आत्मकथा.

2. ऋणानुबंधांचे देणे
